Merry Christmas to ALL from Jan & Art at Jan's Country Garden!!

The rain has been pouring down, the creek is rushing bye at an incredible rate!  More rain in the forecast!!  It's time for us to get some sun.
I checked the dahlias on Wednesday and they look beautiful!  None are rotting, they are firm and plump.  The big snowfall and cold weather didn't phase them at all.  Fortunately they were all out of the ground, divided, treated, and put to bed before Thanksgiving because the next Monday we got a foot of snow.

All of the Dahlias have been dug, divided, and put to bed!!! Hooray!

The last three weeks have been grueling.  Digging, digging, and more digging.  At last, they are all out of the ground and in bed for the winter.  I am so Happy!! :-)

Saturday night's frost ended all the beautiful blooms...

The dahlias in the garden are now looking a very dark green from getting frozen during the night.  I will start cutting them down today.  In two weeks I will start digging and dividing the tubers to store for the winter.  It's been an unusual summer for the growing season and I'm anxious to see how well the tubers produced.  I still have a couple of nice looking bouquets that I picked on Saturday... :-)

2011 Dahlia List udated today!!

After going through the garden and 'tagging' all the dahlias, updating the 2010 list, the NEW updated list was added today.  When you go to the website:  http://www.janscountrygarden.com/ you will view the only version of the website currently on the internet.  The list is updated and you can click on "Dahlia List" on page 2 and find the revised list.

I am working early every morning and late each evening on the computer creating another website which will replace the current one.  I hope to publish it before November 1.  Let me know if you have any questions.  Thanks for your patience.

Fall is coming far faster than expected...

Gitt's Perfection

Alauna Pochette Surprise
I've been in the garden photographing the dahlias with my new Fuji camera.  Nice!  The dahlias are so beautiful right now but you can see the ravages of the colder and wetter days and nights on the leaves and blooms.  Some have just now bloomed, for example, Cabalero--A beautiful orange with yellow trim that came from Michel Robert in France; and surprisingly, Gitt's Perfection has just now put on ONE bloom--I thought I had lost it entirely.

The Garden was certified again in August by the Dept. of Agriculture.

Jan's Country Garden has been certified as a disease-free garden and ships all over the world.  I'm working on updating the website and hope to have it completed by the middle of October.  I'll be posting more photos on this Blogspot as I go along.  Thanks for looking!

It has been a strange year--the strangest I've ever experienced in by 30+ years of growing dahlias!  I'm anxious to see how the tubers have fared this year.

People's Choice!! Winner EVERY day at Clallam County Fair Aug. 19-22, 2010!

The Clallam County Fair began Aug. 19, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. in Port Angeles, WA and ended Aug. 22, 2010, at 7:00 p.m.  What a time it was for my wonderful volunteers:  Richard & Nancy Carey, Cheri Lemley, Debbie & Kim Coté, my sister Lyn Walls, my daughter and granddaughter Laura and Ella.  Best of all, Ann Luke brought a beautiful 3-leaf waterfall made from rhubard leaves to enhance the beauty of the garden's booth.

We handed out Sugar Snap Peas for samples and the looks of amazement on everyone's face when they bit into the pea and the sweet taste was incredible.  We explained how the U-Pick Garden operates; how the Dahlia Garden works, 'when' the Digging, Dividing and Storing Seminar will be held (Sept. 18, 2010 at 1:00 p.m.) and gave abreviated demonstrations with a clump of tubers.  The targets on the back wall were used by our many booth visitors to WIN a free dahlia tuber by throwing a velcro coated ping-pong ball and getting it to stick to the target--very popular.  All-in-all, we had a great time!!

Best of all:  "Jan's Country Garden was over-whelmingly voted as the Best Booth in the Ag Barn during the entire fair," Mary Black, Barn Superintendent.

Great friends in France and Czech Republic will be sending new varieties this Spring! The buds on the trees are starting to turn pink. I can feel the Spring in the air already!! I really want to get this dahlia into my garden. It's name is Tartan and I think it's is beautiful!!
